Baseball is increasingly driven by data, but even in the Statcast era, some of the most informative trends remain overlooked. Home runs, batting average and ERA still dominate conversations, yet expected statistics, bat speed, chase rate and batted-ball quality can reveal changes long before they appear in a traditional box score.

Expected Statistics Can Expose Breakouts Before the Box Score

xBA, xSLG and xwOBA use exit velocity and launch angle to estimate what a hitter’s results should have been. If a player has a .270 wOBA but a .330 xwOBA, the gap may indicate that the quality of contact is ahead of the result. The strongest signals come when expected statistics improve alongside underlying contact quality.

Hard-Hit Rate Is More Useful With Context

Hard-hit rate measures the percentage of batted balls hit at least 95 mph, but it needs context. Barrel Rate and Launch Angle Sweet-Spot Rate reveal whether a hitter is pairing hard contact with a productive launch profile. When hard-hit rate, barrel rate and sweet-spot percentage rise together, the change in contact quality is more meaningful.

Bat Speed Is Becoming a Major Development Indicator

Bat speed measures the speed of the bat at the sweet spot, while Fast Swing Rate tracks swings reaching at least 75 mph. A young hitter whose bat speed improves while his strikeout rate stays stable and his contact quality rises may be developing a much higher offensive ceiling.

Chase Rate Can Quietly Transform an Offense

Reducing chase rate gives a hitter more opportunities to see pitches inside the zone and can improve both walk rate and contact quality. The most interesting players reduce chase rate without becoming passive: fewer bad pitches, strong in-zone contact and preserved power signal genuine improvement.

Pitch-Level Run Value and Shape

Pitch-type run value reveals what ERA can hide. A pitcher may own an excellent slider while a struggling fastball inflates his overall results. Velocity alone is not enough: movement, pitch shape, release characteristics, location and hitter outcomes all determine how an arsenal performs.

Sprint Speed and Defense

Sprint speed affects infield-hit probability, extra-base advancement, defensive range and base-stealing potential. Modern tracking data also measures arm strength, jump, catch probability and catcher pop time, allowing analysts to move beyond counting errors and toward the difficulty of every play.

The Most Important Trend Is the Combination

The most valuable trends rarely exist in isolation. Rising exit velocity is interesting; rising exit velocity, barrel rate, sweet-spot percentage and plate discipline together are far more convincing. Look for statistical clusters rather than individual numbers: when several independent metrics improve at once, a player’s underlying ability is more likely to have genuinely changed.
